Who is Lucia Caminos?
Lucia Caminos is one of the two protagonists of Grand Theft Auto VI, alongside Jason Duval. She was the first character fans saw in the opening moments of the first trailer in December 2023, and she has been at the centre of every reveal since.
Lucia is a big moment for the series: she is the first female protagonist of a main GTA game in the modern era, and she is not an optional character but one of the two leads.
Her background
From Liberty City
Lucia grew up in Liberty City, the series' version of New York. At some point she and her family ended up far from there, in the state of Leonida.
Leonida Penitentiary
According to Rockstar, Lucia ended up in the Leonida Penitentiary after fighting for her family. The first trailer opened with her in prison, which made it clear from the start that her story would not be an easy one.
A second chance
Rockstar says Lucia got out of prison through sheer luck. Now she wants to make the most of it.
What drives her
Rockstar's description says Lucia wants the good life her mother has dreamed of since their days in Liberty City. But unlike her mother's half-baked fantasies, Lucia is ready to take matters into her own hands. That determination is what pushes her forward, and what pulls her into the story's crimes.
Lucia and Jason
Lucia's story is tied to Jason's. The official GTA 6 website describes how both have always known the deck is stacked against them, and how an easy score that goes wrong leaves them on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America.
The trailers and the August 2026 extended look show them as partners, working together, arguing, supporting each other and sharing the risks. Many fans have compared the pair to famous outlaw couples, and the trailers clearly lean into that idea.
Playing as Lucia
The extended look confirmed that control switches between Lucia and Jason. Lucia is a fully playable character with her own part of the story. Rockstar has not yet explained every detail of how the switching works or whether she has unique abilities.
Why Lucia matters
For decades, main GTA games were led by male protagonists. Putting Lucia at the centre of GTA 6 changes the perspective of the story and opens up new kinds of scenes and relationships. It is one of the clearest signs that GTA 6 aims to feel different from what came before, even while returning to the familiar setting of Vice City.
What we do not know yet
- Exactly why she was in prison, beyond "fighting for her family".
- More about her mother and the rest of her family.
- How her story develops after the trailers.
