Who is Jason Duval?
Jason Duval is one of the two protagonists of Grand Theft Auto VI. Together with Lucia Caminos he is at the heart of the story, and players will spend much of the game in his shoes.
Rockstar's official description paints him as a man who keeps trying to get out of trouble, only to find more of it. In Rockstar's words, he wants an easy life, but things keep getting harder.
His background
Growing up
Jason grew up around grifters and crooks. It was not the kind of childhood that sets someone up for a quiet, law-abiding life, and it shaped the way he sees the world.
The army
To get away from that upbringing, Jason spent time in the army. That background sets him apart from many earlier GTA protagonists and may explain some of the composure he shows in tense situations.
The Leonida Keys
After the army, Jason ended up in the Leonida Keys, the island chain in the south of the state. There he found work with local drug runners. It is not the easy life he wanted, but it is the life that found him.
His place in the story
Jason's story is tied to Lucia's. According to the official GTA 6 website, both have always known the deck is stacked against them. When an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America.
The trailers and the August 2026 extended look show the two working together, talking things through and sharing the risks. Their relationship is clearly as central to the game as the crimes they commit.
The people around him
Several of the officially introduced characters are connected to Jason's life in the Keys:
- Brian Heder is Jason's landlord and an old-school drug runner in the Keys.
- Cal Hampton is a friend of Jason and an associate of Brian. He is a conspiracy theorist who prefers to stay indoors.
Our guides on Brian and Cal explain more about them.
Playing as Jason
The extended look confirmed that control switches between Jason and Lucia during the game. Exactly how and when you switch, and whether Jason has unique abilities, has not been fully detailed. What is clear is that he is a fully playable character, not a sidekick.
A new kind of GTA protagonist
GTA protagonists have ranged from ambitious newcomers to seasoned criminals. Jason seems to sit somewhere in between: experienced enough to handle himself, but still hoping for a way out. Combined with his partnership with Lucia, that gives the story a more personal feel than a classic rise-to-power tale.
What we do not know yet
- Jason's exact age and many details of his past.
- How his story ends, of course.
- Whether he has any special gameplay abilities.
We will update this guide as soon as Rockstar shares more, or once the game is out.
