What a lower wanted level cheat does

The wanted level is the system that decides how hard the police come after you. Every crime the police notice adds to it, shown as stars on the screen, and the more stars you have, the more officers, cars and eventually helicopters join the chase. A lower wanted level cheat removes stars, so the pressure drops and you can get back to what you were doing.

It is one of the most practical cheats in a GTA game. It does not give you anything new; it simply gets the police off your back when a situation has gone further than you wanted.

How it worked in GTA V

In Grand Theft Auto V, PC players typed LAWYERUP into the cheat input box to lower their wanted level by one star. Each time you entered the code, one star disappeared, so a five-star chase needed several entries to clear completely. On consoles the same effect came from a button combination, and on all platforms it could also be triggered by dialling a number on the in-game phone.

The one-star-at-a-time design meant players had some control. They could calm a chase down to a level they could handle without ending it completely.

What we know about cheats in GTA 6

There is currently no official information about cheat codes in GTA 6. Rockstar Games has confirmed that the game will be released on Thursday 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Whether it has cheats, and whether one of them lowers your wanted level, has not been announced.

The table at the top of this page will show the real code for each platform once Rockstar Games releases it. Until then we show "not yet known", because we never publish guessed codes.

Why the police matter so much in GTA

The police are part of almost every session in a GTA game. A small mistake, like bumping into a police car, can escalate into a city-wide chase. That is a big part of the fun, but it can also get in the way when you are trying to finish a mission, reach a location or simply explore.

Normally, escaping means breaking line of sight, hiding until the search ends or changing your vehicle. Those are skills worth learning, and they are often the most exciting moments in the game. A lower wanted level cheat is the shortcut for when you do not have the time or patience for that.

Smart ways to use it

Before a mission

Starting a mission while being chased can make it much harder. Clearing your wanted level first gives you a calm start.

After experimenting

Many players use cheats to cause chaos on purpose. A lower wanted level cheat is the clean-up tool that ends the chaos when you are done.

Partial escapes

If the cheat lowers the level one star at a time, as it did in GTA V, you can keep a light chase going for fun while removing the most dangerous part.

Things to keep in mind

Achievements and trophies

In GTA V any cheat turned off achievements and trophies for the current session. They came back after a restart or after loading your save. Save before using cheats if you care about achievements.

Story mode only

GTA V cheats did not work in GTA Online. In a shared world, removing your wanted level at will would be unfair to other players. If GTA 6 has an online mode, we expect the same separation, but it has not been confirmed.

The police can return

Lowering your wanted level does not make you immune. Commit a new crime in front of an officer and the stars come straight back.

The opposite cheat

GTA V also had a cheat that did the exact opposite: it raised your wanted level. Players combined the two to start and stop police chases on demand. We have a separate page for the raise wanted level cheat, which will also be updated as soon as GTA 6 codes are released.
