GTA 6 has not been released yet. This article is based on what Rockstar Games has revealed so far and will be updated when the game launches.
What Year Is GTA 6 Set In?
Short answer
GTA 6 is set in the present day, according to what Rockstar Games has shown. Its trailers are full of smartphones, social media and modern cars.
The present day
GTA 6 is set in the present day. Rockstar Games has not given an exact year, but its trailers make the time clear: characters film each other with smartphones, clips go viral on social media, and the streets are full of modern cars next to classic ones.
This is different from the first visit to Vice City. GTA Vice City, released in 2002, was set in 1986 and was full of 1980s fashion, music and cars.
Retro cars in a modern world
Several of the officially revealed GTA 6 vehicles are classics, like the '55 Vapid Stanier and the '95 Grotti Cheetah. The year in their names is the model year of the car, not the year the game is set in.
