What are the Leonida Keys?
The Leonida Keys are a tropical island chain in the south of Leonida, the state in which Grand Theft Auto VI is set. They are inspired by the Florida Keys, the string of islands that stretches from the tip of Florida into the sea.
Long bridges connect the islands, and water is never far away. It is one of the six regions Rockstar Games has officially introduced.
What to expect
Islands and bridges
The defining feature of the Keys is the chain of islands linked by long bridges. Driving across them, with sea on both sides, is one of the most iconic images associated with the real Florida Keys, and the region in GTA 6 draws on that.
Life on the water
Descriptions of the region point to boating, personal watercraft and underwater exploration. In a place made of islands, the sea is as much a road as the bridges are.
Beaches
Like much of Leonida, the Keys offer sunshine and beaches, but with a quieter, more remote feel than Vice City.
Jason's home turf
The Keys are central to the story of Jason Duval, one of the two protagonists. According to Rockstar, Jason grew up around grifters and crooks and, after the army, ended up in the Keys working for local drug runners.
Two other officially introduced characters are connected to the Keys:
- Brian Heder, an old-school drug runner in the Keys and Jason's landlord, who is said to use his boat yard to move illegal cargo.
- Cal Hampton, Jason's friend and Brian's associate, who likes to listen to Coast Guard communications.
Smuggling and the sea
The character descriptions make one thing clear: in the Keys, crime and the water go together. Boat yards, Coast Guard radio and drug running all point to a region where illegal goods move by sea. How that translates into missions and gameplay has not been detailed, but it gives the Keys a very different character from the city.
Exploring the Keys
If the descriptions hold true in the final game, the Keys could be a great place to explore by boat, to dive below the surface or simply to drive the long bridges at sunset. Rockstar has not yet published details about specific activities, so we will update this guide after release.
The real Florida Keys
The real Florida Keys are known for their laid-back island culture, fishing, diving and famous overseas highway. GTA 6 is a fictional, satirical version, so not everything will match, but the inspiration is clear.
