Which platforms is GTA 6 coming to?
Grand Theft Auto VI has been announced for two platforms: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Both versions are scheduled for release on Thursday 19 November 2026.
That is a shorter list than some players expected. GTA V was released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and later came to newer consoles and PC. GTA 6, by contrast, is aimed only at the current generation of consoles from the start.
Why only current-generation consoles?
Rockstar has not explained its platform choice in detail, but the reasoning is easy to follow. Modern open-world games ask a lot from hardware: large, detailed maps, many characters on screen and complex lighting. Building only for current consoles lets developers make full use of their power without having to scale everything down for older machines.
It also means that players on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will need to upgrade if they want to play GTA 6 at launch.
PlayStation 5
The official GTA 6 website notes that the game "plays best on PlayStation 5". That kind of line usually reflects a marketing partnership between a publisher and a console maker. Rockstar has also used PS5 footage for its trailers and presentations: the second trailer and the August 2026 extended look were both captured in-game on PlayStation 5.
What exactly "plays best" will mean in practice, for example in terms of exclusive content or performance, has not been spelled out in detail.
Xbox Series X|S
GTA 6 is also coming to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on the same day. The Series X is the more powerful of the two; the Series S is a smaller, cheaper console with less graphical power. Rockstar has not yet published a full breakdown of how the game will look and perform on each Xbox model.
What about PC?
A PC version of GTA 6 has not been announced. Earlier Rockstar games have often come to PC some time after their console release. GTA V arrived on PC well after its original launch, for example. Whether GTA 6 will follow that pattern, and when, is not known. Our separate guide on a possible PC release goes into more detail.
What about older consoles?
There is no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version. Rockstar has not announced any plans for one, and given how demanding modern games are, it would be unusual to add one now.
Choosing a platform
If you already own a PS5 or an Xbox Series console, the simplest choice is to play on what you have. If you are deciding which console to buy, it makes sense to wait for detailed information about performance and any platform-specific content. Rockstar is likely to share more of that closer to launch.
- Friends and community. If you want to play future online content with friends, it helps to be on the same platform, although online plans for GTA 6 have not been fully detailed yet.
- Storage. Whichever console you choose, make sure there is enough free space. The final download size has not been published.
- Controllers. Both consoles use controllers that work well for open-world games, so this is mostly a matter of personal preference.
