Has GTA 6 been delayed?
Yes. Grand Theft Auto VI has been delayed twice. It was first planned for 2025, then moved to 26 May 2026, and finally to Thursday 19 November 2026, which is the current release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Delays are common for very large games, and Rockstar has delayed games before. Still, for one of the most anticipated releases ever, every change made headlines. This guide sets out what happened and when.
The timeline
February 2022: development confirmed
In February 2022 Rockstar confirmed that development of the next Grand Theft Auto was well underway. There was no title, trailer or date yet, just the confirmation that work was happening.
December 2023: the first trailer and a 2025 window
The first trailer introduced Vice City, the state of Leonida and the game's protagonists, and ended with a release window of 2025.
May 2025: first delay
Rockstar announced that GTA 6 would move to 26 May 2026. The second trailer followed soon after, giving fans a much closer look at the game.
November 2025: second delay
Rockstar moved the game again, to 19 November 2026. In a statement it apologised for adding more time to an already long wait, and said the extra months would allow the team to finish the game with the level of polish players expect.
Why do big games get delayed?
Rockstar has given polish and quality as its reason. More generally, games of this size are delayed for a range of reasons:
- Scale. A huge open world with many systems has a lot that can go wrong, and testing it takes time.
- Quality. Studios would rather launch late than launch with serious problems.
- Coordination. Large teams spread over several studios need time to bring everything together.
We do not know the details of Rockstar's internal decisions beyond what it has said publicly.
Signs the game is close
Since the second delay, Rockstar has taken several steps that usually happen near the end of development:
- Pre-orders opened on 25 June 2026.
- An extended gameplay look premiered on Netflix on 27 August 2026 and was published on YouTube later that day.
- Editions and bonuses were announced, including the Standard and Ultimate editions and the Vintage Vice City Pack.
None of these guarantee the date, but together they suggest a game in its final stretch.
How to deal with release date rumours
Every big game attracts rumours about further delays or surprise early releases. A few tips:
- Trust official sources. Rockstar announces date changes on its own website and social channels.
- Be wary of screenshots of "leaked" emails or store listings. They are easy to fake.
- Check the date of what you read. Old articles about the 2025 or May 2026 dates still circulate.
